SS/HS Background and History

SS/HS Background & Goals

  • Since 1999, The US Department of Health & Human Services, Education, and Justice have collaborated to oversee SS/HS with individual Local Education Agencies (LEA’s). In 2013, The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) took over control of SS/HS at the federal level and began coordinating SS/HS with State Education Agencies (SEA’s) to provide oversight of LEA’s in the implementation of the SS/HS Grant for the current run of the grant, which began in late 2013.  In early 2014 each of the three LEA’s hired a SS/HS Project Manager/Director.  Each LEA project manager communicates via e-mail and or phone with the State SS/HS Team at the Michigan Department of Education nearly every day.

  • As of January 2014, The SS/HS Grant Program has been in 49 states and 365 communities.

  • SS/HS exists to create and support school & community partnerships in their efforts to develop and coordinate multiple integrated systems that provide safe, drug-free, and respectful environments for learning and to promote better social, mental, emotional, & behavioral health for all children and youth without regard to economic, religious, ethnic, or sexual orientation.  This is accomplished in large part by creating a Community Management Team (CMT), as well as CMT Subcommittees according to each Five Core SS/HS Elements.

  • We are in the initial phases of creating a link from The Houghton Lake Community Schools Website to a Safe Schools/Healthy Students Website on the HLCS Main Website. The intent is to tout the birth through 18, SS/HS activities happenings at Houghton Lake.
